THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOON –: CHP 9 – Time moving fast!

“The only thing that would make me hate you is lying to me.” I told Linnet. I had been lied to by Christine several times and I knew how painful it is to be hurt by someone you love.

Linnet gave me a tight hug and told me, “I will never hurt you.”

Our relationship seemed to move on fast. USB did not seem to know what was going on and so did not bother with us as I had expected.

I went ahead and introduced Linnet to some of my relatives who were living in Nyeri town but we still had a day to visit our parents. We visited my parents first. Linnet was a sociable woman and she blended perfectly with my people.

My own mother began calling her “my daughter” from the very first day. She was extremely hard working both in town and in the village. Like the following day we were at home, it was harvesting day for potatoes and Linnet braced the cold weather and went to the farm with my mum and a few workers.

When I saw her coming home carrying a huge sack of potatoes on her back, it was pretty much obvious she was way stronger than Christine.

“Wow! this is heavy, you carried this all the way?” I asked her.

“Yes, I was brought up in farmland in Nyahururu so I know how to do some of these things.” Linnet told me.

Linnet could even milk the cows, feed them and do a lot more things! She was the perfect woman.

It did not come as a surprise when my mother called me alone and told me, “My son, now this is the woman you should marry, not the other town girl who came here and could barely touch some soil.” My mother told me.

“Oh! Really?” I asked her.

“Yes, a woman who works hard is a blessing to her husband.” My mother told me. Her definition of working hard was obviously different from town people. To her, working hard was measured on farm work and nothing else.

“Alright mum.” I said.

“When are we going to pay dowry for her?” My mother asked. I nearly laughed.

“Not yet.” I said.

My mother fully turned to me and told me, “You are getting late my son. All men your age even have children in lower primary school. You should get married. This is the right woman for you. No doubt. Or are you waiting for a sign from heaven?”

“No mother, I am ok with her. At least you know her too.” I said.

“Then make arrangements, I also would wish to hold your children.” My mother told me.

We continued talking about my life but it was obvious my mother had already fallen in love with Linnet. My parent’s approval made me even wish to meet with her people formally and proceed with other plans.

When we went back to Nyeri town, I knew for sure that it was Linnet I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.

“Part of my family is in Nanyuki and some are in Nyahururu.” Linnet told me when I expressed the desire to meet her people.

“Where is your mother and father?” I asked her.

“My mother parted ways with my father. My father lives in Machakos where he bought a plot and built, married another woman. My mother is in Nanyuki where someone can take care of her. But that is my home too so we can as well go there and meet her.” Linnet told me.

“Fine, I am ok with it. Do you see your father often?” I asked her.

“As long as I tell him I am going, he allows me to go and see him.” Linnet told me.

“Ok, we shall meet your mother first.” I told her.

We made all arrangements to go and visit her mother.

It was on a Saturday when we travelled to Nanyuki to meet her mother. She was a young, pretty mother not like how I expected. She was also very sociable and welcoming. I spent the afternoon there at their home in Nanyuki where one of her sisters too was living.

On our way back, Linnet seemed to be lost in thoughts. I let her remain silent until we got home.

“Your mother is too young, or is it her body?” I asked Linnet. Despite her being well built her face was pretty young, at lest for the children she had.

“My mother got her firstborn while she was 14 years old. I am the thirdborn and we have 3 more children. She has been young forever. Even some people confuse her for our sister.” Linnet said.

“That was pretty young!” I told Linnet.

“Indeed, but she went on to finish her education. Nothing stopped her.” Linnet said.

“But then again, it seems you people have a gene advantage of looking younger than your age.” I told her. She just laughed.

“I wish my children to be like that, as in to age slowly. Look at me here, I am barely past 30 and there are all signs that I will be balding in the next few years if not decades.” I said.

“Not at all, you are not balding, your brother is the one who will bald faster than you.” The brother she was referring to was in fact my cousin who had visited us but we just introduced each other as brothers.

“But I really liked your mum.” Linnet said.

“she is a nice woman.” I told her.

“I should get her as my mother in law very soon.” Linnet said.

“How soon?” I asked her.

“First of all, we shall arrange to pay dowry for you, first things first. As you know, according to our customs, this is a continuous thing and we should get started in a few weeks’ time, probably after a fortnight, let me check me calendar…” I told Linnet and picked my phone. I was scrolling down the calendar when suddenly I got an incoming call from Christine.

“Pick it.” Linnet told me because she also saw it. I picked it.

ME: Hi.

CHRISTINE: Hi.

ME: Tell me.

CHRISTINE: I am pregnant.

ME: (silence)

CHRISTINE: I am pregnant with your child.

ME: That is not mine, when is the last time we had sex?

CHRISTINE: It does not matter, I only had sex with you.

ME: That is a straight lie. I know you. That isn’t mine but for your other playboy man.

CHRISTINE: I am saying the truth

ME: I am wiser now; I cannot be tricked with small things like that.

CHRISTINE: I am being honest with you. If you don’t believe, let the child be born and we shall do some DNA test.

ME: Listen, stop disturbing me, I have a lot going on with my life and the last thing I want is someone trying to mess with me.

CHRISTINE: It is ok, you can go on, I just wanted to let you know.

ME: Listen, you know who made you pregnant and that is not me. Even the last time you nearly tricked me into believing I made you pregnant what makes you think I will just believe now?

CHRISTINE: That was then, but this time, it is you and I am so sure about it.

ME: I cannot trust you. Anyway, I am engaged now, stay away from me.

CHRISTINE: This is your pregnancy and you have to be responsible!

ME: Haiyaaai, responsible for what? Who do you take me for? A fool?

CHRISTINE: Does not matter, you can get engaged, married or whatever but you will be responsible for this too.

ME: Ok, can I invite you for some ceremony?

CHRISTINE: What ceremony?

ME: In two weeks’ time, I am going to pay dowry for my fiancée. From there we take it to the next level and get married at a church wedding. You are my friend, you are invited.

CHRISTINE: I will come.

ME: Do not bring dramas or you will have to face me.

CHRISTINE: Andrew, even if you no longer need me, what about your child?

ME: I do not have a child anywhere else.

CHRISTINE: Ok, we shall see.

ME: Did you have something else to say? I need to do something here.

CHRISTINE: No, I only wanted you to know I am pregnant.

ME: Ok, have a nice evening.

CHRISTINE: You too.

She terminated the call.

“Damn! This girl will be big trouble to me now, she is claiming that she is pregnant for me, I know she is lying!” I said.

Linnet however laughed hard and said, “Wow! congratulations, you are going to be a father soon. Not to just one but two!”

“What do you mean two? Twins?” I asked her.

“No, but I am also pregnant for you too…” Linnet said.
